摘要

The potential for migration of vapors of volatile chemicals in soil and groundwater into indoor air continues to be a driving concern for remediation at sites where buildings are or will be present in the future. While some types of exposure assumed in risk assessment are hypothetical e.g. ingestion of groundwater, vapor migration can represent a real as well as perceived risk. The most commonly used modeling tool, the Johnson and Ettinger (J&E) model, is controversial and regulators, industry and the regulated community are unsure if the predictions are reliable. In the past several years since USEPA endorsed the J&E model, a number of studies have been conducted that compare the concentrations of volatile chemicals in the indoor air estimated with J&E model with the concentrations measured in homes and office buildings.
