摘要

Wherever pigs are bred, housed and finished one can usually observe the same trends particularly with respect to production that is becoming more intensive and technically more sophisticated. But technology has its price. The substantial financial investments only pay off if a certain minimum volume is reached. As a result, pig farms are becoming bigger and bigger in terms of physiological size. And in relation to this expansion, what has increased to a proportionally even greater extent is the capacity ratio, i.e. the number of animals per surface unit. Another characteristic is the virtually fully controlled environmental conditions including regulated temperatures, air-conditioning, humidity etc. Without such conditions, maximum meat production can not be achieved. But these "ideal" conditions for healthy animals are also "ideal" breeding grounds for pests!
