Evaulation of tylosin tartrate in drinking water for the tratment of porcine proliferative enteropathy

The in-feed formulation of the antimicrobial agent, tylosin (Tylan~R premix), is approved for use in the prevention and control of porcine proliferative enteropathy (PPE). Other formulations of tylosin (Tylan Soluble, Tylan Injection) are available but not approved for use in the treatment of PPE outbreaks. Administration of tylosin tartrate in the water to treat infected pigs has been recently reported to reduce the prevalence of clinical signs and lesions of PPE when used at doses of 5.0 mg per kg bodyweight or higher for 7 days. This study was conducted to evaluate and confirm the effectiveness of tylosin tartrate when added to the drinking water on growth performance, gross intestinal pathology scores, histopathology scores, morbidity and mortality using a mucosal homogenate challenge to induce Lawsonia intracellularis (LI) infection in 28 day old pigs.
