System Safety for a New Generation of Combat Vehicle Trainers

The Transportable Reconfigurable Integrated Crew Trainer (TRICT) is a mine-resistant, ambush-protected (MRAP) vehicle training device developed for the U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM) by the Software Engineering Directorate within the U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Research, Development and Engineering Center. A key objective is to reduce casualties from rollovers caused by improvised explosive devices. While previous trainers simulated vehicle rollover, the TRICT adds a high-fidelity vehicle cab, with functionality of major subsystems to enable crew training in virtually every aspect of vehicle operation. The TRICT is the first military vehicle training device to combine a fully immersive training environment with motion capability in both the pitch and roll axes, including complete rollover capability. Realism is enhanced by video displays in place of all vehicle windows. Displays show scenery moving by outside the vehicle and are synchronized with motion and sound effects imparted to the cab. A preliminary hazard list was compiled and served as the basis for more in-depth analysis and documenting of residual risk for acceptance. Understanding and managing the risk to trainees undergoing this realistic training activity will help ensure the safety of soldiers in theater who experience a very dangerous vehicle rollover event.
