Safety Assessment in Development of Railway Signalling System - An Example of 'COMBAT'; Train Control System for Secondary Lines

This paper introduces an example of a safety assessment of the train control system "COMBAT" for secondary lines. We carried out safety assessment based on results of a safety analysis using FMEA and FTA, and confirmed a safety of the COMBAT. We developed the COMBAT in conformity with Japanese safety guideline for a railway system based on basic philosophy of IEC61508. We documented results of technical activity of each phase through a system life cycle. These results were evaluated by specialists' committee organised outside our institute, and the committee confirmed a safety and reliability of the COMB AT.
