Due to the unsuitable pharmacokinetic properties of natural penicillins, amoxicillin (AMX) is regarded as an alternative for strategic metaphylaxis of streptococcal diseases. In humans, AMX possesses an excellent bioavailability (F), which is not lowered by feed, and a slower body clearance than penicillins G and V. Our first goal was to assess the pharmacokinetics and oral bioavailability of AMX trihydrate in early-weaned piglets. We also aimed to determine by means of a pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) simulation whether a continuous or pulsatile strategy is more effective.
