Enzootic pneumonia is one of the most common and economically important respiratory disease. Pasteurella multocida type A plays a role as secondary agent in the mycoplasma induced respiratory disease. The ability to further characterize individual strains of P. multocida would be of great value in epidemiological studies concerning to the transmission of this bacterium in the pig population. Serotyping and DNA fingerprinting are tools which can be used to elucidate relationships among bacterial isolates. Serotyping of both capsule and somatic antigen is an aid for diagnosis of P. muliocida. However, typing relies on phenotypic traits which are inconsistently expressed and does not provide enough information for epidemiological studies in which differentiation among strainsof P. multorida would be desirable. DNA fingerprinls and typing have been used to characterize P. multocida isolates associated with progressive atrophic rhinitis and porcine pneumonia. In this study we used DNA fingerprinting to differential P. muliocida type A strains collected from four swine finishing farms with respiraiory problems.
