A vaccine for immunising an animal against diseases caused by micro-organisms which produce an osteolytic toxin, with the vaccine comprising an immunologically effective quantity of a recombinant, immunogenic, detoxified Pasteurella multocida toxin or a recombinant, immunogenic, detoxified Pasteurella multocida toxin analogue, which vaccine is characterised in that it is encoded by a nucleotide sequence which encodes a Pasteurella multocida toxin or a Pasteurella multocida toxin analogue and which is inserted in an expression vector which is able to replicate in a suitable host microorganism in which the sequence can be expressed. The toxin which is produced, or the toxin analogue which is produced, is subject, where appropriate, to post-transcriptional modifications in order to obtain the detoxified toxin or the detoxified toxin analogue. Alternatively, the nucleotide sequence is modified before being inserted into the expression vector in order to obtain a toxin or the toxin analogue in a detoxified form. The use of a monoclonal antibody against Pasteurella multocida toxin or toxin analogue, a labelled DNA sequence which is homologous with a DNA sequence which encodes a toxin or a toxin analogue, and the toxin or the toxin analogue as such as diagnostic agents, are also described.
