A STUDY ON THE EFFICACY AND ECONOMICAL ADVANTAGE OF FLUNIXIN MEGLUMINE IN GILTS WITH MASTITIS METRITIS AGALACTIA SYNDROME

Mastitis metritis agalactia syndrome (MMA) is characterized by hypogalactia or agalactia in association with other clinical abnormalities such as anorexia, pyrexia, mastitis or metritis. Sows with MMA have increased pre-weaning mortality and demonstrate poor reproductive performance during the subsequent parity. Gilts are more susceptible to MMA than sows. Several treatment regimens including steroid or non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in combination with antibiotics have been used to reduce MMA1'2. The study was conducted to investigate the efficacy of flunixin meglumine (Finadyne~R) in the treatment of MMA in comparison to no treatment and to tofenamic acid with regards to the performance of gilts and their offspring.
