Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a peripheral neuropathy in which the median nerve is compromised. It is the most frequent compressive focal mononeuropathy in clinical practice and while a vast number of treatment options are available, there is presently a lack of conservative and cost-effective treatments with demonstrated long-term benefits. The primary aim of this study is to gather and evaluate data regarding the efficacy of acupuncture treatment in conjunction with traditional therapies versus traditional therapies alone. This is a case control study in which 22 participants were randomized and received traditional therapies for CTS with either a patch or true acupuncture). The results were mixed and no definitive conclusions can be drawn. It is recommended that future studies obtain larger subject pools and study the effects of acupuncture for longer durations with the intent-to-treat each subject in order to better assess acupuncture's role in the future of CTS treatment.
