In this paper, we focus on the user interface (UI) in an interactive learning environment (ILE) system for chemical experiments. UI of ILE an adopted direct manipulation (DM) technique using graphical user interface (GUI). It is easy to manipulate the environment through DM, but DM is not appropriate for insight learning. Easier interaction does not always imply more effective interaction. We focus here on indirect manipulation (IM) and propose an "indirect manipulation and execution-type mediator" (IMEM) to adopt an ILE, whose functions are execution based on learner design, recognition of learner experimental design, judgement of learner design, and advice to the learner.
