A method of system identification for nonlinear vibrating structures incorporating cubic stiffness elements is presented. It is based on the describing function (DF) method and uses frequency response data at resonance obtained from different forcing levels to identify both the linear and nonlinear parameters of the system. Simulated experiments and results are included to illustrate the feasibility of the method by its application to multi degree of freedom nonlinear systems. Further, the proposed method gave encouraging results when tested as a means for locating cubic elements situated within the structure.
