Thermophilic and hyperthermophilic hydrogen production from sugarcane stillage in an anaerobic fluidi2ed bed reactor
The current energy supply excessively uses fossil fuels, whose resources are rapidly depleting. Hydrogen is a promising alternative. Fermentative hydrogen production can generate valuable end products and, at the same time, use high strength organic wastewaters as substrate, such as sugarcane stillage. It is the main liquid residue from ethanol production, generating 13 L of vinasse per each liter of ethanol produced. The feasibility of hydrogen production from sugarcane stillage in thermophilic anaerobic fluidized bed reactors (AFBR) has been previously demonstrated [1].
