Rising to the Challenge of Insider Threats for Middle Powers

Insider threats present a growing challenge to the security of any modern computer network. As technical controls become more advanced and secure design principles become more widely implemented, the risk of an insider threat relative to an external adversary becomes increasingly relevant. This is amplified in situations where the computer network is isolated or separated from other computer networks through an airgap. Middle powers need to continue to rise to the challenge presented by these insider threats to protect themselves against their adverse impacts. Defending against insider threats requires a holistic approach, from the development of appropriate regulatory principles and frameworks to the implementation of efficient security operations centres, advanced technical security controls and the development of competent and informed security analysts. This paper draws from several doctoral researchers in cybersecurity to explore these individual facets and weave them together into an integrated topography for navigating the insider threat.
