True chirality can only be observed in 3 dimensional objects, but due to manufacturing limitations current chiral devices prepared by standard lithographic processes are limited to 2 dimensions. One alternative often used is growth through self-assembly or on biological chiral precursors, which yield truly chiral materials, but are difficult to include in devices and to characterize electrically. Alternatively, straight nanowires with an intrinsic chirality exist such as carbon nanotubes or atomically thin gold nanowires.
