The use of receptable lasers for optical sources in single modefiber systems for telecomms and datacomms is reviewed. The factors thatinfluence the choice between a receptacle laser and a fiber-pigtailedpackage are discussed. A novel package design capable ofgigabit-per-second operation is described. The design considered meetsthe requirements of high-speed operation, reproducibility of coupledpower, ease of cleaning, and operation over a wide temperature range.The major advantage of flexibility of use of receptacles, which comesfrom the ability to easily disconnect the laser from the fiber, cantherefore be obtained without sacrificing performance
