The ultimate strength analysis of stiffened plates is important to the safety assessment of ship structures. For the fore part of ship structures, the stiffeners are often not perpendicular but inclined to the plates. For the ship bow structure with bow flare, the slamming pressure is the main external loads that cause damages and failure to the structure. The objective of this study is to investigate the ultimate strength of stiffened plates with inclined stiffeners, based on the nonlinear finite element method using the commercial software package ABAQUS. In addition, typical rule requirements of ship classification societies are discussed. When the web tilt angle is over 20° for T stiffener and 10° for Inverted Angle(I.A.), the influence of web tilt angle need to be considered in the calculation of plastic section modulus(SM). By comparing the numerical results and theoretical predictions, it is found that the theoretical results are conservative for the plastic SM of plate with inclined stiffener.Parametric studies are performed for T stiffener, which reveals that the geometric parameters have little effect on the reduction factor for the web tilt angle ranging from 0° to 55°, A design curve to calculate the SM for plate with inclined T stiffener is proposed.
