The City of West Palm Beach, Florida recently embarked on one of the largest projects of its kind to rehabilitate a 40+ year old PCCP force main using a fiber-reinforced cured-in-place method. A condition assessment concluded that a significant number of pipe segments had broken wire wraps, ranging from 5 to 100 broken wires per 20-foot segment, providing a significant risk of failure. Since there are no other lines that carry the city’s flow, the City made the decision to be proactive and repair the pipe before a catastrophic failure could occur.The 48-inch diameter pipeline, running more than a mile at 5,700 lineal feet, required an alternative solution as rerouting the flow was not possible. A fiber-reinforced CIPP product from Insituform was selected to strengthen and rehabilitate the line. Completed in October 2016, the jobsite presented numerous challenges, including a significant portion of the job location running through a private country club near and million dollar homes, near a canal, and across a private condominium complex with extremely tight access. As stated above, the line was responsible for carrying 100 percent of the City of West Palm Beach’s sanitary sewer flows, so shut down was not an option. During installation, the country club’s golf course also had to be kept open.
