Strength for the Future - Modern Goncepts and Mechanisms

The principal trends of the paper and board industry are driven by cost savings and increasing efficiency. In this context, replacement of fibers by filler, displacement of higher cost fiber material with lower cost fiber material and improving the production output of today's paper and board machines have a direct influence on the strength of the manufactured products. In our lecture, we will present approaches to understand the mechanism of paper strength for dry paper and also of the sheet structure in a partially dried state. Fiber treatment with synthetic additives is included in the discussions as well as various methods of filler modification and activation. Molecular Modeling is used to support our theories on the level of fundamental interactions between fibers/fillers and chemical additives. Concrete examples on a pilot and a mill scale, respectively, illustrate the applicability of our concepts.
