Nowadays, Switzerland is in the planning of the 57 km long Gotthard Base Tunnel - the longest railway tunnel in the world. Due to its length, the large overburden of up to 2300 m and the complicated geology, this tunnel will be regarded as one of the most challenging tunnel projects in the Switzerland's tunnel history. The paper will report the actual planning and construction works for the Gotthard Base Tunnel.
