The IBM Corporation has assigned a high priority to reducing substantially the time required to design, and release to manufacturing, advanced system product technologies. This work is intended to demonstrate the significant efforts that have been made over the years within IBM to accommodate this process, as well as to lay the groundwork for accelerating to accelerate key leverage areas as they become viable. The work also highlights the changes that have been made-and are continuing to be made-in the design process. A further intent is to review the complexities of a multilaboratory environment, and the impact that it has on the reduction of the total product development cycle time. Finally, there is a discussion on managing this entire process, the need to adhere strictly to standards, and the synchronization of engineering changes with system and software enhancements.
