Performance measurement systems have been revised in response to a changing environment. There are some change drivers that are leading the process such as rapid development of technology, global operations network and an increasing customer conscience about their role in the social economic system. As a response to these change drivers, companies are reviewing their strategic management systems and special attention is being given to performance measurement systems. This paper discusses the use of performance measures by companies from the perspective of operations management. OM professionals who are participating in an executive training in Industrial Engineering are surveyed in order to obtain their perceptions regarding the use of performance measurement. The applied questionnaire is founded on previous research that identified a set of performance measurement roles references and it explores the relationship between them and a classical operations strategy structural framework. The survey provided 104 questionnaires from OM professionals that work in Curitiba Metropolitan Region - Brazil and represented essentially manufacturing companies of different sectors as automakers, automakers part suppliers, electronics, furniture and wood and food. The results show that the perception of OM professionals related to performance measurement use is strongly connected to traditional uses as management control, but it also reveals significant responses for change process and continuous improvement purposes.
