The lack of interlayer shear resistance might result in slippage between pavement layersand cause U-cracking in surface. An approach to evaluate the shear resistance in asphaltpavement based on shear strength envelope for asphalt pavement interface was developed.The distributions for shear stress and normal stress in pavement interface under trafficload were analyzed by finite element method. According to the results of scatter plot ofshear stress and normal stress, the formation of shear stress critical boundary wasidentified. The criterion which would guarantee the performance of shear resistance fortack coat materials is that there is no intersection of shear stress critical boundary andshear strength envelope. By introducing the shear fatigue equation at interface, fatiguelife is connected to the parameters of shear strength envelope, cohesion (c) and internalfriction angle (Φ). Discussions about effects of cohesion (c) and internal friction angle (Φ) onshear fatigue life are also conducted. Further research for incorporating shear fatigue factorsinto this evaluation is also discussed.
