Wood Group Kenny Houston was recently contracted to perform strength checks for spider buoy I-tube riser connectors since new flexible risers were to be installed. Accordingly, a FEA based strength analysis was performed to check the strength of the riser connectors using the commercial FEA software ABAQUS. The methodology and results from the strength analysis of the riser connectors is discussed in this paper. The base case for the strength analysis is in accordance with the recommendations of API RP 2RD. The Duplex and Super Duplex Itube material coupled with cathodic protection system makes the riser connectors susceptible to Hydrogen Induced Stress Cracking (HISC). Hence riser connector strength checks based on the recommendations of DNV RP F112 were also considered as a part of this check. Conclusions based on the results of these studies are presented in this paper.
