Organization of learner's knowledge on basic concepts in computer literacy

We investigate how the learner's properties influence organization of learner's knowledge on basic concepts by analyzing data of a survey. The survey is performed for science major students and nonscience major students. The learner's properties, learning motivation and cognitive style, and organization of knowledge on several basic concepts are observed in the survey. The analysis explicates that students with the style of the bottom-up processing tend to form hierarchical organizations if they are knowledge-oriented in the course and nonhierarchical organizations if they are only interested in how to use computers. The result is independent from students' majors. On the other hand, there is a different conclusion for students with the style of the top-down processing. We suggest that curriculums in computer literacy education should be designed according to learner's properties.
