As one of the most important electrical components in distribution systems, the Miniature circuit breaker(MCB) has been widely used to protect the electrical equipment. In particular, the low-voltage dc circuit breaker intrigues more and more researchers recently. In this type of circuit breaker, an electric arc is formed in the interrupting process which is a transient arc plasma in a complex chamber geometry with splitter plates. To control the arc evolution and extinguish the arc are of vital significance. An experimental apparatus to investigate the characteristics of the air arc has been built up in this paper. The arc voltage and current waveforms are recorded and analyzed. The emission spectral of air arc with different materials of the sidewalls are measured and the temperatures of the arc plasma are calculated. The experimental results show that the gassing materials such as PA66 and POM have an influence on lowering the temperature of the arc, which are beneficial to arc extinction.
