The system demands from the operational community can be different from the research scientist. Operational systems require high reliability, automated data error check and distribution and ease of operation. This session includes papers that report on various aspects of Real-Time measurement systems including instrument design and placement, data quality assurance and data distribution. The Teague et al. report on advances on remote sensing of river currents using HF radar that may one day provide operational measurements. Dally presents results from a multi-year ADCP deployment providing real-time current and wave data along the Florida coast, while Wilson and Siegel describe a real-time current and wave measurement system deployed in the Chesapeake Bay. Haines et al report on lessons learned from quality control of wave and current data. In a complementary paper, Fredericks et al report on using Web Services to distribute real-time ocean current and wave data. Mullison et al. describe a new ADCP system design that specifically addresses the needs of the operational users.
