As one category of specialty paper grades, automobile filter paper is widely used as the filtering material for automobile filter, and it is usually manufactured via a resin-impregnation process. In recent years, the improvement of the performance of automobile filter paper has been widely concerned. In this work, using styrene, acrylic ester, acrylic acid, and N-methylolacrylamide as the base materials, a series of styrene-acrylic emulsions were prepared via the preemulsification and semicontinuous copolymerization method. The emulsions were subsequently used for the preparation of emulsion- impregnated automobile filter papers (emulsion dosage of 20%, drying temperature of 140 , and drying time °C of 6 min), and the influence of emulsifiers on air permeability and water resistance was investigated. The use of emulsifiers decreased air permeability by 6-11%. When the emulsifiers including OP-10/SDS, OR-2/S-100, and OR-2/CO-436 were used, air permeability was maintained by more than 94% (in comparison to the base paper). When the emulsifiers including OP-10/S-100, OP-10/CO-436, OR-2/FR-1, OR-2/RS-610,S-201/FR-1,S-201/OF-40,S-201/RS-610 ,FOR-3/S-100,FOR-3/COPS-1 and FOR-3/OF-40 were used, air permeability was maintained by more than 90% (in comparison to the base paper). The emulsifiers including OP-10/FR-1, OR-2/FR-1, and FOR-3/OF-40 were capable of achieving very high water resistance, i.e., above 240 min. The emu * lsifiers including OR-2/COPS-1 and FOR-3/RE-610 gave relatively good water resistance values of 30-50min. Also, when OP-10/SR-10,OR-2/SR-10,S-201/FR-1,FOR-3/COPS- 1, and FOR-3/RE-610 were used, and water resistance was maintained at 10-30min. On balance, the emulsifiers capable of maintaining both good air permeability (>90%) and good water resistance were OR-2/FR-1, FOR-3/OF-40, S-201/FR-1, and FOR-3/COPS-1. By optimising the use of emulsifiers, the control in air permeability and water resistance of automobile paper is presumably possible.
