With its advantages in energy conservation, environmental friendliness, less land use, safety, and convenience for inter-city high-capacity transportation, the high-speed railway has become the mainstream in the world' s railways. This paper, based on China' s current development and future in energy conservation and emission reduction and the role transportation plays in this endeavor, analyzes the high-speed railway relevant effects in cutting energy consumption, improving energy mix, and reducing emissions; it also suggests measures and approaches to emphasize energy conservation in engineering design, strengthen energy-saving management in operations, and strictly control emissions.
