Computer aided manufacturing information system implementation insights for managers

This paper describes the design and implementation of a disk media manufacturing information system. The purpose of this system is twofold. First, it supports the management of a manufacturing facility by providing comprehensive data acquisition and information delivery tools. Second, the information system is a building block toward providing enterprisewide connectivity. Client/server, open systems architecture, and a real-time reporting capability were specified among requirements for this project. The system consists of an Oracle RDBMS residing on Sun servers as the data repository for various Automated Data Collection Subsystems (ADCS), as well as Work In Progress (WIP) tracking. The system also interoperates with a legacy Manufacturing Execution System (MES), based on an IBM AS/400 minicomputer. A new software tool, Wonder Ware's Intrack, is being evaluated for MES implementation. It incorporates Object Oriented Programming (OOP), and is written in C++.
