A digital computer control system and the Model Reference Adaptive COntrol (MRAC) algorithm are proposed for improving the stability of the weld pool widith shape in Metal Intert Gas (MIG) welding. Severl cases where the system parameters such as welding process current, travel speed (welding table speed), electrode stickout (wor feed speed) and weld pool width are changed have been considered. An infrared sensor was used to sense the value of the weld pool widhth. At the instants where the welding process is carried out, the plant parameters of the welding proces are unknown. As a consequence, their values were predicted using the well-known adaptive algorithm of the integration of product.
