Reduction of commercial garbage collection noise in Portland, Oregon

A community noise task force in Portland, Oregon identified commercial garbage collectionnoise occurring during pre-dawn hours as one of the primary sources of complaint fromcitizens in the city. A noise study was commissioned by the City to help determine costeffective measures that might be used to help reduce the amount of noise generated bycommercial garbage haulers in the City. This paper describes and presents the results of a studyundertaken by Daly-Standlee & Associates, Inc. in conjunction with the City of Portland’sNoise Control office. The results of the study showed that a treatment of low cost dampingmaterial on garbage dumpsters and UHMW plastic sleeves on front end loading garbage truckforks could provide up to a 7 dB reduction in garbage collection noise. This paper presents adiscussion of only the dumpster treatment. Garbage truck fork treatment will be addressed in afuture paper.
