Numerical Studies of Green Water Impact on Fixed and Moving Bodies

A numerical time domain simulation model has been developed tostudy greenwater phenomena and its impact loading on structures.In thismodel, a volume of fluid (VOF) technique is used to capturethe violent free surface motion. The incompressible Euler/Navier-Stokes equations, written in an arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian(ALE) frame, are solved using projection schemes and a finiteelement method on unstructured grids. Numerical simulations ofgreen water problems carried out in this study include: i) greenwater overtopping a fixed 2D deck; ii) green water impact on afixed 3D body without or with a vertical wall on the deck; andiii) green water impact on the deck and deckhouse of a movingFPSO model. Numerical results obtained using the presentmodel are compared with experimental measurements for eachcase, and fairly good agreements are obtained. The present numericalmodel can thus be used for simulating green water effects.
