When pumps and boiler units were installed in the cellars of houses and buildings, the impact of the direct airborne noise on the occupants was virtually negligible. Now with the adventof newer technology, wall-mounted gas boiler units with an integrated pump unit, are frequently beinginstalled directly into dwellings, in kitchens, bathrooms and sculleries. This means that the airbornenoise from the unit now impacts the occupants 24 hours a day. This paper describes how the soundquality technique has been used to attempt to quantify the annoyance produced by pumps integrated indomestic gas boiler units and whether the technique gives significantly more understanding of theannoyance than other methods (single point sound pressure level, sound power level, etc). The paperalso discusses how the results can be introduced into the product design process.
