Local connected fractal dimension analysis of early chinese landscape paintings and X-ray mammograms

Local and global applicatons of multifractals to the analhysis of digitized image intensities (I(x, y) is discussed. The magnitude of the local slope | nabla I(x, y)| is shown to be a more useful meaure than I(x, y). A global fractal dimension D may be estimated from the spectral density S(k), the angle-averaged pair correlation C(r), and massradius M(R). For image enhancement, the conept of local fractal dimension can be used to construct a color-coded dimensional image. Applications to the classification of early Chinese landscape paintings and x-ray mammograms, hoever, suggest that the local connected fractal dimension provides the best agreement with the human eye for highlighting and discriminating between images.
