A pictorial drawing records a solid according to the rules of projection and we come to a conclusion about the solid from the pictorial drawing. The conclusion needs reasoning of topological relations and measurement that obeys the rales of projection. This experiment designed to show the difference of problem-solving brought about by knowledge of the rules of projection. With this purpose, the experiment compared students of graphics with students who had not studied graphics (laypersons). A pyramid represented in two different pictorial drawings of cavalier projection and isometric projection were given to the subjects. The subjects judged whether the pyramids described in the two pictorial drawings were of a same figure. Laypersons paid attention to the information of sides and angles in the pictorial drawing. The laypersons misunderstand assuming that the properties of figure are kept in the drawing. They are confident that the true length, angle or shape is recorded in the drawing. Their typical reading error is that the solid is recorded as a congruent figure in the drawing.
