摘要

The paper will be a comprehensive summary of major results obtained in the frame of three European studies performed under the control and sponsorship of British, French and Swiss Environmental Agencies (DETR, ADEME & BUWAL). The three studies converge to designate the SMPS (Scanning Mobility Particulate Sizer) as a reliable and repeatable tool to measure with high accuracy the number of ultra fine particles (smaller than 1 mincron) in the diesel exhaust at steady state or during driving cycles. By application of this metrology technique, it shows clearly that only traps can reduce significantly the particulates number when engine and catalyst technologies are not efficient and could even be detrimental
