Full-scale fire tests have shown that composite floor slabs behave well in fires even withrnunprotected steel beams. The main reason for this favorable behavior is the membrane forcesrncaused by large deflections in the reinforced concrete slabs.rnA tailor-made finite element program called SlabFem which takes membrane forces intornaccount is being developed to investigate this problem. The main focus of this paper is on arnnew approach to model the flexible shear connection between the steel girder and thernreinforced concrete slab. When the temperature increases the steel beams loose their strengthrnif they are not protected and the shear studs get more flexible. This has a direct influence onrnthe load carrying mechanism.
