The transition from doctoral student to assistant professorcan be a challenging one for many students. The process isunfamiliar for many and presents unanticipated challengesand opportunities. The function of this panel is to providean interactive platform for faculty members at all stages oftheir careers to provide advice and input for doctoralstudents nearing the completion of their doctoral work. Thispanel will provide valuable insight on finishing thedissertation, going on the job market, and beginning anacademic career. The format will allow for participants toask questions anonymously, questions that may beembarrassing to ask. The seven panelists represent allstages of the academic career: two assistant professors,three associate professors (including two associate deans),and two full professors (including one interim dean and onedean). The participants come from seven differentinstitutions, representing two countries (U.S. and Canada).The panel will be of greatest use to those doctoral studentsat the end of their doctoral program, but may also be ofinterest to doctoral students beginning their doctoral workand new assistant professors.
