Image registration is the key component in image fusion where multiple imagery can be collectively exploited to provide much more useful information than that done with a single image. Image registration for images taken at different times, on different flight paths, by different sensors, is a hard problem to solve because of the change in image texture between the images. The changes between the images, mainly caused by change in look angles, platform positions and sensor characteristics, can be manifested into changes in scales, perspectives and intensities; are certain to break an image registration algorithm that is based on correlation of image data alone. Furthermore, the passive nature of an electro-optic (EO) sensor is known to be not very accurate in geolocation, especially with consideration of terrain variance. The availability of orthorectified reference data, such as Controlled Image Base (CIB) and Digital Terrain Elevation Data (DTED) can be used as a gateway to connect the two images to be registered by geolocation. Our approach to the problem is both image and feature based. It is assumed that Infrared (IR) bands be available in the night-time image which allows the separation of transient signals, for exmple man-made hot and bright spots, from the more permanent and natrual signals. The process developed is fully automated, and requires only a handful of system parameters. A successful execution of the process will produce a pair of registered images, with improved geolocation.
