Improving resource efficiency practices within the construction sector: A case study of Tingdene Homes in the UK

Whilst studies have examined public participation in solid waste management, there has been limited research into employee participation, especially in the UK construction sector. This research sought to identify the key factors that influenced positive behaviour amongst the workforce towards waste management practices. A combination of questionnaires, an ethnographic study and informal discussions with the workforce were employed as the research tools. The results showed that although there were positive attitudes within the workforce towards the environment, a number of barriers were detected that limited resource management behavior. For example, greater management and supervisor support for resource management was required, along with increased knowledge and ease of access to recycling facilities. The results also highlighted the need for the company to implement an appropriate environmental management programme that has an emphasis on education.
