The paper presents the basic steps leading to the derivation of the stiffness and mass matrices for the new dynamic finite element for beam-type slender elements with transverse crack. It further discusses its implementation in the dynamical analysis of cracked frame structures. Although the basic idea of the paper is devoted to cracks, the application can also be utilised for the modelling of other local stiffness reductions or plastically deformed parts of structures, as for example plastic hinges.
