The invention relates to a method for automatically determining an orientation factor of a printed circuit board and a simulation device provided for this purpose (1). The input is a digitized layout (6,7) that indicates a size of the PCB and a spatial arrangement of components (8) on it. An arrangement of a plurality of predetermined test particles (10) with random positions and orientations is then simulated superimposed on the detected digitized layout (6, 7). For each of the test particles (10), check whether it creates a connection (13) between at least two of the components (8),where any such detected connection (13) is counted as a short circuit (13). To determine the orientation factor, a total number of simulated test particles (10) is compared to the number of short circuits (13). The orientation factor thus determined is then provided as output.
