Lighting device for a motor vehicle, in particular headlights, comprising- a light source from which light emanates during operation of the lighting device,- projection optics (2) from which the light emanating from the light source is projected into the exterior of the motor vehicle during operation of the lighting device, wherein the projection optics (2) have an exit surface (9), the projection optics (2) comprising a first part (3) and a second part (4), the light emanating from the light source during operation of the lighting device at least partially passing through the first part (3) and then through the second part (4), and - a brightening device (13) which is arranged on or in the projection optics (2) in such a way that during operation of the lighting device it increases the illuminated area (17, 18) causes the exit surface (9), wherein the brightening device (13) comprises an opening (16) extending in the direction of the vo n the first part (3) to the second part (4) of the projection optics (2), the light emanating from the first part (3) of the projection optics (2) during operation of the lighting device being more than 90% unimpeded the opening (16) of the brightening device (13) passes.
