A method and system for calculating distance data (110) for a structure (101). A scan surface 120 representing an inspection area 121 of the structure 101 is identified. A plurality of sample points 122 on the outer surface 114 identified from the model 112 of the structure 101 and a corresponding plurality of projection points on the inner surface 118 identified from the model 112 of the structure 101 123 is generated using the scan surface, a first geometrical representation of the outer surface 114 , and a second geometrical representation of the inner surface 118 . Distance data 110 is calculated using a plurality of sample points 122 and a corresponding plurality of projection points 123 . The distance data 110 identifies a distance between a pair of points formed by the sample points of the plurality of sample points 122 and a corresponding one of the corresponding plurality of projection points 123 .
