A piston for an internal combustion engine comprises a piston body with a generally planar crown and a sidewall extending from the crown. A stepped combustion cavity is recessed in the crown and comprises an outer cavity, which is recessed relative to the crown and defines a generally planar annular floor surface. The graduated combustion trough further comprises an inner trough, which is recessed relative to the outer trough. The inner trough comprises a side wall, which continuously inclines inwards from the outer trough to a floor surface of the inner trough. Several protruding lips extend from the sidewall towards a central axis of the piston body.
