The invention relates to a method for securely storing a data element to be stored of a predetermined data type by a computer program in an external memory (64) which is connected to a microcontroller (50), wherein an error correction value of an error correction value data type is used. The procedure includes when creating the computer program: defining a composite data element comprising an element of the data type and an element of the error correction value data type in the computer program; and when running the computer program: calculate the error correction value for the data element to be stored;form an error correction data element as the composite data element containing the data element to be stored and the associated error correction value calculated for the data element; and write the error correction data item to a memory address for the error correction data item. Furthermore, a corresponding microcontroller and a computing unit are provided.
