The present invention includes a method for characterizing disease activity in a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), said method comprising obtaining a data set associated with a blood, serum, plasma or urine sample from said patient, said data set comprising: a blood, serum, plasma or urine sample in each of b) to (g); at least one native serum or plasma vector biomarker; at least one adaptive serum or plasma vehicle; at least one chemokine/adhesion molecule biomarker; at least one soluble TNF phase biomarker; the inflammatory mediator biomarker SCF; comprising data indicative of a level of at least one SLE-associated autoantibody specific biomarker; and calculating a Lupus Disease Activity Immune Index (LDAII) score.
