The present disclosure relates to the biochemistry of reagents useful for ammonia detection in liquid samples. Specifically, the present disclosure relates to technical improvements in enzyme-based tests for ammonia that can be used, among other uses, in the analysis of plasma samples taken from patients in clinical settings. In this regard, the stability of reagents containing NAD(P)H is improved to improve shelf life and consequently to detect ammonia. Ammonia released as a result of NAD(P)H decay in an exemplary reagent is scavenged using an enzymatic reaction to convert the ammonia using GLDH, NAD(P)H and 2-oxoglutarate, whereby the NAD ( Forms L-glutamate, NAD(P) + and H 2 O in P)H containing reagents.
