It provides a nonlinear optical dye comprising a compound represented by the following general formula (1). In the general formula (1), X ₁ , X ₂ , X ₃ and X ₄ are each independently a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, a halogen atom, a hydroxyl group, a nitro group, a cyano group, or a methylsulfonyl group. _{In the present invention, it is preferable that X 1} , X ₂ , X ₃ and X ₄ in the general formula (1) are each independently a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, or a halogen atom. Further, in the present invention, the nonlinear optical dye preferably has a dipole moment value of 2.1 D or less and a maximum absorption wavelength in the range of 315 to 360 nm.
